A forbidden friendship in racist Louisiana in the 1930s...
William is a child with little talent. Conversely, Abelard has extraordinary intellectual abilities. But he can't go to school: Black people aren't accepted. A pact is struck between the two children. Abe will help William with his homework, and William will always find him work. William thus climbs the ladder of local society, founding his own company in which Abe, the handyman, makes decisions from the sidelines.
Will William decide to give Abe his rightful place, to put a "Negro" in his chair? Can a childhood friendship, however strong, survive such tensions?
